What to know before you go (May 2026)

Most Delhi-NCR markets have a weekly closed day, but the rules are looser than they look. Practical notes:

  • "Closed day" usually means 60-80% closed, not 100%. A handful of shops in every market stay open even on the designated off-day.
  • Malls + branded showrooms ignore the closed day. DLF, Select Citywalk, Ambience, Pacific are open all 7 days.
  • Festival weeks override the closed day. During Diwali, Karva Chauth, Eid, and Christmas, markets stay open through their normal off-day.
  • UPI is universal across all markets in this guide; cash helps with the oldest shops in Chandni Chowk, Sadar, Khari Baoli.
  • Metro is the smartest way to reach almost every market on this list — driving + parking is painful in all of them.
  • Wedding season (Sept-Feb) pushes markets to stay open longer hours; off-season (Mar-Aug) they shut earlier.

Quick rules for Delhi-NCR market trips

  1. Confirm before you leave: even shops in markets that "stay open" can shut for personal reasons. A quick call to one shop in the lane saves a wasted trip.
  2. Mall vs market: if your closed-day choice is between a market with 20% open and a mall, mall always wins on guaranteed footfall.
  3. Festival weeks reset the rules: Diwali, Karva Chauth, Eid, Christmas — every market on this list runs through its normal closed day plus extended hours.
  4. Friday Jumma: applies only to Muslim-area markets and only for 1-4 PM. Plan to walk there at 11 AM or after 5 PM.
  5. Best mid-week day: Wednesday or Thursday for any market. Lowest crowds, full opening, sellers patient with browsing.
  6. Sunday in Old Delhi: Daryaganj Sunday Book Bazar opens. Most other Old Delhi wholesale closes. Plan around the book bazar if you go.

Real questions on Delhi market timings

Q. Is Sarojini Nagar Market really closed on Mondays? I went last Monday and it was open.

A. Most lane shops are closed Monday but some main-road and metro-end shops stay open. The market itself is not "shut" — about 30-40% trades. The full experience needs Tue-Sun. Go Monday only if you have time to kill and are okay with limited stalls.

Q. Which day should I avoid Chandni Chowk?

A. Monday (most shops shut), Saturday late afternoon (worst crowd density). Go Tue-Fri 11 AM-2 PM for the calmest experience.

Q. Which markets stay open all 7 days?

A. All branded malls (DLF, Select Citywalk, Ambience, Pacific, Vegas), Khan Market, Connaught Place inner / outer circle, INA Market (food + groceries), most South Delhi commercial markets in GK, Defence Colony, Vasant Vihar.

Q. Are markets open on national holidays (15 Aug, 26 Jan, 2 Oct)?

A. Yes — branded retail and malls run normal hours. Old Delhi markets often open later (12-noon onwards) on these holidays. Government markets like INA also shift schedules slightly.

Q. Best one-day Delhi shopping route on a Sunday?

A. Sarojini Nagar (closed Monday, fully open Sunday) → Janpath → Connaught Place → Khan Market for dinner. Skip Chandni Chowk and Sadar on Sundays — too many closures.
