Rum has come a long way in India. The old image of a soldier-canteen drink mixed flat with cola has been replaced - quietly, but firmly - by a generation of drinkers buying aged sipping rums, single-cask Indian craft bottles and pot-stilled imports off retail shelves. The catch: most "premium" rum lists end up sliding past Rs 4,000 a bottle. This one does not.
Updated for May 2026, this is an India-only guide to 12 rum brands you can buy for under Rs 2,000 per 750ml - verified across Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana retail. Grouped into four buckets - premium aged, mid-premium daily-pour, Indian craft, and spiced.
Indian rum pricing is a state-by-state lottery. Delhi (DSIIDC) retail is 12-25% cheaper than Maharashtra (MSEDC); Karnataka and Telangana sit between. Prices below are Delhi MRP to Maharashtra MRP for 750ml.
Premium Aged Rums Under Rs 2000 (May 2026)
The bottles you sip neat or on a single rock. None needs a cola.
1. Bacardi Reserva Ocho (8 Year)
Bacardi's "Ocho" - eight-year aged in white American oak - is the closest thing to a premium sipping rum at this price in India. Originally a private Bacardi-family blend, reintroduced commercially in 2015. The nose opens with banana bread, light tobacco and oak; the palate is dry, with cocoa nib, dried apricot and a long, vanilla-laced finish.
Style: Aged Cuban-style (column-still, ex-bourbon casks)
ABV: 40%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,750-1,950
Best serve: Neat, room temperature; or a single large rock.
2. Captain Morgan Black Spiced
Not the regular Spiced Gold - Black is a darker, drier, pot-still-heavy expression aimed at the sipping crowd. The nose has burnt sugar, clove and a hint of liquorice; the palate is treacle, ginger, leather and a dry oak finish. The spiced rum you can actually drink neat.
Style: Caribbean blend, pot-still forward
ABV: 40%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,650-1,850
Best serve: Neat with an orange twist; or in an Old Fashioned.
3. Old Monk Gold Reserve (12 Year)

The flagship Mohan Meakin variant for serious Old Monk drinkers. Matured for a minimum of 12 years in oak casks at the Ghaziabad distillery, dialled down on caramel-sweetness vs the standard Old Monk 7 Year. The nose is dense - molasses, dark chocolate, raisin, leather - and the palate carries cocoa, dried fig and a warming oak finish. An outright bargain in the aged-rum bracket.
Style: Indian dark, blended, 12-year cask aged
ABV: 42.8%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 950-1,300
Best serve: Neat, or with a splash of water.
4. McDowell's No.1 Single Barrel
A newer line from United Spirits (Diageo), finishing the McDowell's No.1 base in selected single oak casks. The nose carries vanilla, butterscotch and a faint coffee note; the palate is creamy, with toasted almond, dried cherry and a medium-length oak finish. A real step up from regular McDowell's Celebration.
Style: Indian, single-cask finish
ABV: 42.8%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,400-1,700
Best serve: Neat or on the rocks.
Mid-Premium Rums Under Rs 2000 (May 2026)

The everyday-cocktail-and-occasional-sip bracket. Solid quality, fair pricing.
5. Havana Club Anejo 3 Anos

The Cuban Daiquiri benchmark. Triple-aged white rum - tropical fruit on the nose, light vanilla and oak on the palate, crisp finish. India stock arrived through Pernod Ricard in 2023 and is now reliable across metros. If you make Mojitos and Daiquiris, this is the bottle.
Style: Aged white, Cuban-style
ABV: 40%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,500-1,750
Best serve: Daiquiri, Mojito.
6. Bacardi Carta Blanca

The world's best-selling white rum and workhorse of every home bar. Lightly aged in white oak then carbon-filtered - dry, almost neutral, with a subtle vanilla-citrus note. Built to disappear elegantly into a Mojito, Pina Colada or rum-and-Coke.
Style: White, column-still, charcoal-filtered
ABV: 40%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,150-1,400
Best serve: Mojito, Pina Colada, Cuba Libre.
7. Captain Morgan White

Column-distilled, lightly aged, charcoal-filtered. Slightly fuller-bodied than Bacardi Carta Blanca with a touch more vanilla sweetness. Reliable for cocktails wanting a hint of body.
Style: White, lightly aged
ABV: 40%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,250-1,500
Best serve: Daiquiri, Mojito.
8. Mount Gay Eclipse
The cornerstone bottle from Barbados' Mount Gay (founded 1703 - oldest continuously operating rum brand in the world). A blend of pot-still and column-still rums aged in ex-bourbon casks. Banana, almond, honey on the nose; medium-bodied with toffee, baking spice and a clean dry finish. Worth every rupee for a genuine Bajan rum.
Style: Bajan blend, ex-bourbon cask aged
ABV: 40%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,800-1,995
Best serve: Neat, on rocks, or in a Mai Tai.
Indian Craft Rums Under Rs 2000 (May 2026)

India's craft rum scene barely existed five years ago. As of May 2026 there are three labels worth your attention - all under Rs 2,000, all single-distillery.
9. Maka Zai (White and Aged)

India's first craft rum house, by Stilldistilling Spirits in Goa. White is a rare Indian rhum agricole - distilled from fresh sugarcane juice, not molasses - grassy, herbaceous, dry. Aged is molasses-based, in American and French oak: vanilla, dried apricot, soft cocoa finish. Both punch above their price.
Style: White (cane juice agricole) / Aged (molasses, oak-aged)
ABV: 42.8%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,200-1,500 (white); Rs 1,800-2,000 (aged)
Best serve: White - Ti' Punch, Daiquiri. Aged - neat.
10. Pumori Single Malt Rum

From Piccadily Distilleries (Indri whisky's parent), named after the Himalayan peak. A single-distillery, single-malt-mash rum - malted barley + molasses base, ex-bourbon casks at altitude. The nose is unusual - dry oak, light caramel, faint marzipan; the palate is medium-bodied, with toasted barley, vanilla and a long warming finish.
Style: Indian single-distillery, malt-mash rum
ABV: 42.8%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,650-1,950
Best serve: Neat or with a single large rock.
11. Rumpy
From Globus Spirits' craft division. Small-batch dark rum aged in oak casks. Sweeter than Maka Zai - vanilla, fudge, hints of dark chocolate on the nose; banana, demerara sugar and soft spice on the palate. A good gateway craft rum if Old Monk is your daily reference.
Style: Indian craft dark rum, oak-aged
ABV: 42.8%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,100-1,400
Best serve: Neat, on rocks, or in a Rum Old Fashioned.
Spiced Rums Under Rs 2000 (May 2026)
Flavour without the cocktail bookwork.
12. Captain Morgan Spiced Gold

The default spiced rum in India and globally. Caribbean rum infused with vanilla, cinnamon, clove. Dessert-leaning nose; sweet, mellow palate with cinnamon and toffee. Goes shockingly well with cola, ginger beer or a single rock.
Style: Caribbean blended, vanilla-spiced
ABV: 35%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,300-1,550
Best serve: Captain & Cola, Captain & Ginger.
13. Sailor Jerry Spiced

Caribbean spiced rum named for the American tattoo artist Norman Collins. Higher proof than Captain Morgan (46%), noticeably less sweet - clove, vanilla bean and cinnamon with a drier finish. Better in cocktails than as a sipper.
Style: Caribbean spiced, higher-proof
ABV: 46%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,750-1,995
Best serve: Spiced Daiquiri, Sailor's Mule, neat.
14. Bumbu Original (when available)

An indulgent Barbados-blended spiced rum - heavy on vanilla, banana, honey and warm spice. Indian availability is sporadic; when it does land, it sits at the top of this list. Worth grabbing for special occasions.
Style: Caribbean blended, heavily spiced
ABV: 40%
India price (May 2026, 750ml): Rs 1,900-2,000 (when in stock)
Best serve: Neat on a single rock.
How to Spot a Good Rum Under Rs 2000
Four things to read off the back label before you pay:
- "Aged X years" or cask type stated explicitly - generic "matured" or "smooth" claims usually mean caramel-coloured young rum. The real labels state cask type (American oak ex-bourbon is most common).
- Single-distillery vs blended - a named distillery (Mount Gay, Maka Zai's Stilldistilling, Pumori's Piccadily) means a defined house style. "Caribbean Blended Rum" means the marketer mixed stocks from multiple sources.
- Molasses vs cane juice (rhum agricole) - most rum is molasses-based, which is fine - sweeter, fuller-bodied. Cane-juice rum (rhum agricole) will say so explicitly and is grassier, drier - rare in India outside Maka Zai White.
- State excise sticker - Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi each carry a state hologram. Avoid bottles where the sticker is misaligned or missing.
Price is not quality. Old Monk Gold Reserve at Rs 1,200 punches above several Rs 3,000 imports. Pumori at Rs 1,800 is a more interesting drink than most blended Caribbean rums at twice the price.

FAQs
Q. What is the best rum under Rs 1500 in India in May 2026?
For an aged sipper, Old Monk Gold Reserve (12 Year) at around Rs 1,000-1,300 is unbeatable. For a craft alternative, Rumpy in the Rs 1,100-1,400 band is the most interesting Indian dark rum at this price. If you want a versatile cocktail base, Bacardi Carta Blanca at Rs 1,150-1,400 is the safest buy.
Q. Are Indian craft rums actually as good as imported rums?
For their price band, yes. Maka Zai (white and aged) and Pumori hold their own against imported rums at the Rs 2,500-3,500 range. They lose nothing to molasses-blend imports, and Maka Zai's white agricole is genuinely unique - there is no comparable cane-juice rum at this price in India.
Q. White rum vs gold rum - which is better for cocktails?
White rum (Bacardi Carta Blanca, Captain Morgan White, Maka Zai White, Havana Club Anejo 3) is the cocktail default - cleaner, more neutral, lets the lime and sugar speak. Use it for Mojitos, Daiquiris and Pina Coladas. Gold rum (Mount Gay Eclipse, Bacardi Reserva Ocho, McDowell's Single Barrel) is for stirred or richer cocktails - Old Fashioneds, Mai Tais, Rum Manhattans - or for sipping neat.
Q. What is the difference between molasses rum and cane juice rum (rhum agricole)?
Molasses rum is distilled from the syrup left over after sugar refining - it is sweeter, fuller-bodied and the dominant style globally. Cane juice rum (rhum agricole) is distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice and is grassier, drier and more vegetal. Maka Zai White is one of the few cane-juice rums available in India.
Q. Which is the best spiced rum under Rs 2000?
For straight sipping or with cola, Captain Morgan Spiced Gold at Rs 1,300-1,550 is the safe default. If you want a higher-proof, drier, more cocktail-friendly spiced rum, go for Sailor Jerry at Rs 1,750-1,995. Bumbu, when in stock, is the dessert-style premium pick.
Q. Why does rum cost so different in Delhi vs Mumbai?
State excise duty. Delhi (DSIIDC) operates on a lighter duty structure than Maharashtra (MSEDC), which adds higher slab-based excise on imported and premium spirits. Goa is cheaper than both. Always check the state hologram before paying.
Q. Is rum gluten-free?
Yes - rum is distilled from sugarcane (molasses or juice), no gluten. Pumori is the rare exception with a malt-mash base, so coeliacs should treat it cautiously.
This list will be revised quarterly. If a label you expected is missing, it is either out of the under-Rs-2000 zone in May 2026 (Diplomatico Reserva, Plantation Pineapple, Appleton 8 Year all moved up in 2026) or hasn't crossed Indian retail yet. Cheers.
