Disney+ Hotstar is now JioHotstar - the merged platform launched on 14 February 2025 and as of May 2026 hosts more than 300,000 hours of content across 19 languages, including the entire Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, 20th Century Studios and HBO catalogues alongside the deepest Bollywood and South Indian library on any Indian OTT. The branding inside the app still says Disney+ Hotstar in many places, the URL still works, and the audience still searches for it that way - so this guide treats them as the same service.
I have spent the past month re-watching the catalogue (the things I get paid to do) and what follows is a curator's shortlist for May 2026 - not a 100-film dump, but a tight 32-title guide organised by mood, language and use-case, with IMDb ratings, runtimes, the director's name, and a two-sentence reason to actually press play. If a title is not on this list, it is because something better in its lane is.
Last updated: May 2026.
Hindi cinema is where Disney+ Hotstar is unbeatable in India. The platform inherited the Star/Fox library, picked up the Maddock and Junglee Pictures slates, and through 2024-2026 has been first-window for some of the most talked-about Hindi releases. These are the eight that hold up on a second watch.
IMDb: 8.7 | Runtime: 2h 27m | Director: Vidhu Vinod Chopra
![]()
Vikrant Massey plays UPSC aspirant Manoj Kumar Sharma in a film that is part biography, part civic-service hymn, and entirely earned in its emotional crescendos. Chopra strips the Bollywood gloss and lets the Mukherjee Nagar coaching ecosystem breathe - this is the rare 8.7-rated Hindi film that deserves the rating.
IMDb: 8.3 | Runtime: 2h 23m | Director: Nitesh Tiwari
![]()
The college-sports nostalgia comedy that has only grown more poignant in the years since Sushant Singh Rajput's death, with a third-act message about failure that lands harder than any National Award winner this decade. Watch it with friends you have lost touch with - and then call them.
IMDb: 7.7 | Runtime: 2h 31m | Director: Meghna Gulzar
![]()
Vicky Kaushal disappears into Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw with a moustache and a swagger that turn an India-Pakistan war biopic into a character study. Meghna Gulzar's restraint is the secret weapon - she trusts the man's deeds to do the talking and lets the audience cheer at the right moments.
IMDb: 7.6 | Runtime: 2h 8m | Director: Behzad Khambata
Yami Gautam's pre-school teacher takes 16 children hostage and the country watches the news cycle metabolise her demands in real time. It is a hostage thriller with a closing argument - and a sharper one than most courtroom dramas in this list.
IMDb: 6.6 | Runtime: 2h 10m | Director: Jagan Shakti
India's Mars Orbiter Mission, with Akshay Kumar as the swaggering ISRO project director and Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu and Kirti Kulhari as the women who actually got it there. The science is dumbed down and the dialogue is signpost-heavy, but the goosebump moment when MOM enters Martian orbit is undeniable.
IMDb: 7.6 | Runtime: 2h 4m | Director: Rahul V. Chittella
Sharmila Tagore's first Hindi film in 13 years, opposite Manoj Bajpayee, in a quiet Delhi-bungalow drama about a joint family on the eve of selling the house. It is the closest a Hindi OTT release has come to feeling like a Mira Nair short story - and the performances will outlast the year.
IMDb: 6.1 | Runtime: 2h 37m | Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Tabu plays a R&AW operative hunting a mole in a slow-burn spy drama Vishal Bhardwaj writes, scores and directs himself. The IMDb rating undersells it - this is for adults who want their espionage with a Hindi-Urdu literary register and zero Pathaan-style theatrics.
IMDb: 6.5 | Runtime: 2h 37m | Director: Amar Kaushik
Varun Dhawan turning into a werewolf in the forests of Arunachal Pradesh sounds like a YouTube parody, and for the first 20 minutes Maddock's horror-comedy universe entry plays like one. Then it earns its monsters, its environmental sub-text and a Stree-universe cameo that justifies the whole thing.
The Disney bundle on JioHotstar is the only legal way in India to stream the full Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Pixar catalogue, and the 20th Century Studios back-catalogue (which means Avatar, X-Men, Planet of the Apes, the Deadpool films and a lot more). These eight are what I would queue first.
IMDb: 7.5 | Runtime: 3h 12m | Director: James Cameron
![]()
Cameron's underwater Pandora is still the most technically ambitious thing on any streaming service, and 192 minutes blow past you when the water-Na'vi sequences kick in. Watch on the largest screen you can find with the volume up - it is the closest streaming gets to a theatrical IMAX.
IMDb: 7.5 | Runtime: 2h 8m | Director: Shawn Levy
The R-rated MCU debut that turned a multiverse fan-service exercise into 2024's highest-grossing film. Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine in the yellow suit is what people will remember, but it is Ryan Reynolds' fourth-wall narration that holds the chaos together.
IMDb: 7.5 | Runtime: 1h 36m | Director: Kelsey Mann
Pixar's adolescence sequel introduces Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui to Riley's headquarters and earns every tear in its second half. It became the highest-grossing animated film ever - now you can watch it from the couch and figure out which emotion you are running on today.
IMDb: 8.0 | Runtime: 1h 40m | Director: Pete Docter
A middle-school band teacher dies on the way to his big jazz break and has to fight the after-life bureaucracy to get back to his body. The Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score wins the Oscar; the Pixar metaphysics wins the rewatch.
IMDb: 8.4 | Runtime: 1h 45m | Director: Lee Unkrich
Miguel sneaks into the Land of the Dead on Dia de los Muertos and stumbles into a family secret involving the most famous musician in Mexican history. It is the Pixar film that always wrecks even the most jaded critic - put it on for a quiet Sunday afternoon and watch the kids and the grandparents both go quiet.
IMDb: 7.1 | Runtime: 1h 55m | Director: Shawn Levy
Ryan Reynolds plays a non-player character in a GTA-style open-world game who realises he is in a video game. It is The Truman Show with a Fortnite skin, and it is the most fun a Hollywood comedy has been since Game Night.
IMDb: 8.1 | Runtime: 2h 32m | Director: James Mangold
Matt Damon and Christian Bale rebuild the Le Mans race in the engineering-bay drama that won two Oscars and is still the gold standard for motorsport films. If you have a Premium plan, this is the title to test the 4K stream on - the engine sound design is theatrical-level.
IMDb: 7.1 | Runtime: 1h 39m | Director: Dan Trachtenberg
The Predator franchise reset, set in 1719 with a Comanche warrior (Amber Midthunder) hunting the Yautja in the Northern Great Plains. Lean, tense, ferocious - it is the kind of streaming-only film that justifies the entire format.
South Indian cinema is where JioHotstar has been most aggressive on acquisition through 2025-2026 - the Star Vijay catalogue, Lyca Productions output, and Mollywood streaming-first deals all live here. Here are six picks across Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
IMDb: 8.2 | Runtime: 2h 15m | Director: Chidambaram
![]()
Eleven friends from Kochi go to Kodaikanal and one of them falls into the Guna Caves - a real 2006 incident dramatised with white-knuckle craft. Malayalam cinema's biggest box-office hit ever, and a sound-design demonstration disguised as a survival thriller.
IMDb: 7.5 | Runtime: 2h 47m | Director: Mani Ratnam

Mani Ratnam's 50-year passion project, finally on screen - Kalki Krishnamurthy's Chola dynasty epic with Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai and Trisha. AR Rahman's score and Ravi Varman's cinematography belong on the largest screen in the house.
IMDb: 7.8 | Runtime: 3h 7m | Director: S. S. Rajamouli
![]()
The Telugu fictional bromance between freedom fighters Komaram Bheem (NTR Jr) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) that won the Best Original Song Oscar for "Naatu Naatu" and rewired what an Indian film could be globally. Watch the shoulder-dance scene first if you have not seen it - then watch the whole film.
Director: Anand Menen | Streaming on JioHotstar from 8 May 2026
The sequel to the 2024 Malayalam sleeper hit Vaazha, dropping on JioHotstar in the same week this guide goes live. If you missed the original (it is also on the platform), watch both back-to-back - they are the rare Indian comedies that take male friendship seriously.
Director: Jiyen Krishnakumar | Streaming on JioHotstar (April 2026)
Tamil family drama rooted in the cultural specificity of the maternal-uncle relationship in rural Tamil Nadu - the kind of film that would never get made by a streaming-first commissioning team but is exactly why JioHotstar's wide acquisition deals matter. Patient, unhurried, and one of the most honest films of the year.
Streaming on JioHotstar from 24 April 2026
A Malayalam political thriller in the post-Drishyam idiom of upper-middle-class characters confronting the institutional rot they have benefited from. Slot it between Manjummel Boys and Vaazha II for a Malayalam-cinema weekend.
Hotstar Specials is the platform's in-house originals brand - now the dominant Indian streaming-original imprint by viewership in 2025-2026, with Special Ops 2 ranked the most-watched Indian streaming original of the year. These five are the ones I would actually recommend, not just the most-streamed.
IMDb: 8.6 | Format: 7-episode series | Showrunner: Neeraj Pandey
Kay Kay Menon's R&AW officer Himmat Singh is back, and the threat this time is a financial-warfare conspiracy that uses the Indian banking system as a weapon. It is the rare Indian spy drama that respects the audience enough to keep the procedural detail in - 29.6 million viewers cannot be wrong.
IMDb: 8.1 (franchise) | Format: 8-episode series | Lead: Pankaj Tripathi
The fourth Criminal Justice season puts advocate Madhav Mishra inside a domestic-murder case where the prime suspect is a 14-year-old girl. Pankaj Tripathi has played this role four times now and still finds new register every season - this is the franchise's best instalment since the original.
IMDb: 8.6 | Format: Animated series | Studio: Graphic India
India's longest-running animated mythology series, with episode-level production values that have grown season-on-season. Season 6 picks up in the post-Lanka war Ramayana arc and is the show I would put on for a 9-year-old before any Western superhero cartoon on the platform.
Format: Limited series | Genre: Social drama
A small-town Hindi drama about a marriage breaking down under the weight of marital rape and the absence of legal recourse. It is hard, deliberate, and unlike anything else commissioned by an Indian platform this year - watch it sober, in one sitting.
Format: 6-episode series | Producer: National Geographic
Gordon Ramsay travels from the Konkan coast to the Western Ghats to cook with regional spice growers - the rare food-travel show that does not flatten Indian regional food into a single "curry" plotline. Watch it before you book your next domestic-tourism trip.
If you do not want to scroll, here is the curator's shortcut. These six lists are how I actually pick from the catalogue when the brief is fuzzy.
Coco (8.4) for the cry, Inside Out 2 (7.5) for the conversation about emotions, Soul (8.0) for the music, and The Legend of Hanuman for the bedtime arc. All four are dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam on JioHotstar.
Gulmohar (7.6) if your partner reads literary fiction, 12th Fail (8.7) if they want to cry well, Free Guy (7.1) if they want a popcorn comedy that is also smart. A Thursday (7.6) if you both like to argue about ethics afterwards.
Special Ops Season 2 across one Saturday (7 episodes, ~6 hours), then Criminal Justice: A Family Matter on Sunday. If that is too procedural, swap in Chhichhore + Manjummel Boys for an emotion-and-thriller pairing.
Avatar: The Way of Water, RRR, Ponniyin Selvan: I, Ford v Ferrari. All four reward the 4K Premium tier - turn the lights off and the Atmos on.
Khufiya, Soul, Prey, Manjummel Boys. Tight runtimes, deep sound design, no second-screen distraction permitted.
Inside Out 2 (96 min), Prey (99 min), Soul (100 min). The platform's three best under-100-minute films, in three different moods.
The platform has consolidated its plan structure since the JioCinema merger in February 2025. Pricing as of May 2026 in India:
All three tiers now share the same content library after the JioCinema merger - Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, 20th Century, HBO, Hotstar Specials, regional Indian films, live cricket and football. The only differences across tiers are stream count, resolution and ad-frequency.
Supported devices: iOS and Android phones/tablets, Android TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, smart TVs from Samsung/LG/Sony/Mi/OnePlus, Windows and Mac browsers (Chrome/Edge/Safari), and the JioHotstar Linux app for power users. PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox apps are also live.
Saving on the subscription: JioHotstar is bundled free with several Jio postpaid mobile plans (Rs. 299 and above) and is also a benefit on Flipkart Plus, several Bank of Baroda credit cards, and the Rs. 999/year Tata Neu+ subscription. Compare these against the Rs. 1,499 standalone Premium plan to find the lowest landed cost.
The service is officially JioHotstar after the 14 February 2025 merger with JioCinema, but the Disney+ Hotstar branding is still in widespread consumer use, including on this guide. The URL hotstar.com still works and now redirects within the JioHotstar interface.
Yes - the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (Phases 1-5), all Pixar feature films, the Star Wars Skywalker saga, and most Disney animated classics are available in India on JioHotstar as of May 2026. They are unlocked at every paid tier (Mobile, Super, Premium); only the streaming resolution differs.
JioHotstar's Mobile plan at Rs. 499 per year (Rs. 41/month equivalent) is the cheapest legal stream. For 4K, you need the Premium plan at Rs. 1,499/year - which still works out to roughly Rs. 125/month and is by some distance the cheapest 4K-supporting tier among Indian OTTs.
Yes, on iOS and Android. Most films and series support offline downloads at SD or HD quality, with a 30-day expiry from download date and a 48-hour playback window once you start watching. Live sports cannot be downloaded.
Special Ops Season 2 if you like spy thrillers, Criminal Justice: A Family Matter if you like courtroom drama, and The Legend of Hanuman if you have kids. Skip Bigg Boss unless you are already invested.
Yes - Manjummel Boys, Ponniyin Selvan: I, Vaazha II, Thai Maaman and Pratichaya are all on the platform as of May 2026, and the Star Vijay catalogue plus the Lyca Productions slate make this the deepest Tamil/Malayalam library on any single Indian OTT.
Yes - the Premium tier supports 4K Ultra HD plus Dolby Vision HDR on supported titles (Avatar: The Way of Water, Ford v Ferrari, the Pixar catalogue, most MCU films) and Dolby Atmos audio on compatible hardware. The Mobile and Super plans cap at 720p and 1080p respectively.
If you are paying for one Indian OTT in May 2026, JioHotstar gives you the deepest catalogue per rupee - the entire Disney/Marvel/Pixar/Star Wars stack, the strongest Hindi originals slate (Special Ops 2, Criminal Justice 4, 12th Fail), and the broadest South Indian acquisition. The only gaps are the Yash Raj Films back-catalogue (which sits on Amazon Prime Video) and the Karan Johar Dharmatic slate (which is split with Netflix). Everything else is here.
Start with 12th Fail if you have not seen it. Then queue Manjummel Boys, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Special Ops Season 2 in that order. Four titles, roughly 15 hours, and you will know whether the Premium plan is worth your Rs. 1,499.
